Top 50 things to do and attractions in Semarang (2024)

Toko Oen is a famous Indonesian restaurant that has been in business since 2010. Toko Oen is unique because it still offers colonial Dutch cuisine, such as Uitsmijter, Kaasstengels, Huzarensalade, and others. This is because the shop specializes in selling Dutch ice cream flavors such as tutti frutti, napolitaine ice cream, and oen ice cream symphony.

I think a visit to Toko Oen when I am in Semarang is almost a necessity. This legendary merchant has an old vibe that stood the test of time. I wish that they had maintain the building & all the rooms better though. However, still a dear to me.Came here many times before actually but the last time I was here, I was with my parents. My dad asked for ice cream at Toko Oen, so the children abide 😁It was so heartwarming to see my dad reminiscing the old days when he used to come to Toko Oen for ice cream during his teenage years (he's 80 now) 🥲So yeah to me this place is more than just a restaurant, it's a time capsule, a memory, that I hope will last.Food is good, mostly Dutch-Indonesian. Ice cream is great. I'm a fan for 'olden-days' ice cream style. Oh and you must order the Poffertjes, just get the co*klat & cheese one. They are so small, sometimes 1 portion is not enough. Best eaten hot though.

old building design with high ceilings. The air conditioner is cold enough for the heat of Semarang City. The taste of the food is old-style but pretty good. what I consider a "must try" is the tongue steak, the pieces are thick. there are many choices of ice cream. Sadly, there are no photos in the menu book.

Love the atmosphere, the cookies & bread also follows the "old collonial" era style. Good place to hang & enjoy the ambiance, the ice cream are just so-so to be honest.

Legendary restaurant with the concept of an ancient Dutch colonial era building. anyway, it maintains the appearance of the building which has characteristics. for the taste of food in my opinion is not special, what you buy here is a cool old Dutch colonial atmosphere.

Best 'old-style' cafe-resto in Semarang. The ambience is very classic.Only tried the coffee and ice cream. Actually the ice cream is not very special, the coffee is also classic. But should try chilling out in this place.

I ordered Grilled Sirloin Steak and it came perfectly delicious for me! the sauce is mushroom sauce and perfectly executed. What I like best is the ice cream, so light yet creamy. Toko Oen also have bakery shop, and the bread and pastry also delicious.Toko Oen keep their old style and I love it, as I heard about Toko Oen from my late grandma, I felt like she were there with us.

Great food and service! The atmosphere was amazing that brings you back to Chinese Dutch era bakery store. My favorite is their Rum Raisin ice cream … it was fantastic!

Quite a mixed feelings toward this shop. Firstly, parking spot was hard to find when the shop was crowded. Secondly, seating arrangement were even harder to get especially during peak hours.Upon the arrival of the ice cream and poffertjes, we were so excited for our desserts, as we imagined having a classic Dutch inspired taste and texture. However we were quite disappointed, not that the dessert was bad, but it surely didn't live up to our expectations.Overall, it was still a nice visit. I recommend visiting in a less crowded hour. And i would totally recommend and revisit this place.

Visited the most classic restaurant in Semarang, the infamous Toko Oen. In this visit, i'm not too keen to ordered heavy menu, so we go for light bites and something sweets. Me and sis ordered their Kroket and Resoles for appetizers. Isn't a big fan of their Kroket, however totally love their Resoles filled with vegetables ragout, both served with their signature gooey sauce and green pepper. Also ordered their Poffertjes Campur (Keju & co*klat) and Napolitaine Ice Cream (totally recommended their ice cream for you guys to try). Their Poffertjes overall pretty nice with abundant toppings of sugar powder, chocolate sprinkles and shredded cheese (gonna be extra delicious if they add condensed milk in my opinion). They're pretty busy during Christmas lunch time, however their staff is pretty nimble and attentive. For this visit to Toko Oen Semarang, i'm gonna rate them 4 out of 5.For more info about foods, kindly visit asmunchkin on IG.

Vintage, quaint restautant and bakery in Semarang, from 1936. Served kue-kue old dutch style and food. Bestik lidah, sapi, babi are some of their best menu. Very good ice cream and other dessert like poffertjes.Their Nasi Goreng Special and Mie Goreng are also recommended. Classic old dutch/chinese style atmopshere. One of must try legendary resto in Semarang

A legendary dessert and pastry shop! Rum raising is a must try ❤️ love the ambience as they still keep the vintage decoration. Place is also quite spacious with 2 indoor areas. Parkir is okay, but maybe a bit hassle if the place is full. Price is reasonable with the taste.

Very crowded on the weekend/public holiday, there was a waiting list. The place was quite small, and I think they were lack of staffs. I asked for chilli sauce for about 3 times and it came in the 3rd times I called them. The food plating was very average. But the taste was pretty good. The price also a bit pricey compared with the taste.

Established in 1936, Toko Oen has been serving the Semarang community for generations. The vintage interior, complete with marble tabletops and antique décor, has remained largely unchanged, preserving its historic charm.Toko Oen is a living relic of the Dutch colonial era. The ambiance and décor take you back in time, and you'll feel like you've stepped into a time machine. This unique setting adds a touch of nostalgia to your dining experience.Toko Oen is renowned for its ice cream, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The flavors were rich and creamy, and the sundaes were beautifully presented. We couldn't resist trying a few different flavors, and each one was delightful.Toko Oen not only excels in the ice cream department but also in serving delectable savory dishes. Their "Bestik Sapi" (beef steak) is a standout. Cooked to perfection, it's a true crowd-pleaser.Don't Miss the Jajan Kering If you're a fan of traditional Indonesian snacks, Toko Oen offers an array of these delightful treats. Crispy, sweet, and savory, they make for the perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee or tea. You must order Lidah Kucing. These culinary delights are just more reasons to make Toko Oen your go-to spot when visiting Semarang.

Typical old style restaurant that served lots of pastries and old style cookies. If you are craving for lidah kucing or maybe old style cookies, you should visit this place. Their ice cream and poffertjes worth to try.

Minerva Angellia — Google review

Food was not exceptional but try their poffertjes if you come here! Other food was so-so, not particularly good but not bad either. Their bitterballen is worth to try. Bring some snacks too on your way home. Their lidah kucing is the best in town! Pelayannya kebanyakan udah tua, tapi tetep helpful kok, be kind aja 🤗 tempatnya luas dan kid friendly! Biasa buat kumpul keluarga juga

I love the atmosphere here, cozy and elegant at the same time. The food is good but a little too much for my size. I tried the sausage susijsbrood, it's good but not very special.

This old classical-style restaurant is a gem, offering a taste of timeless charm. We stopped by to indulge in their ice cream, a perfect choice to beat the heat of Semarang.

Veronica Ika — Google review

Nice ambience with old town vibes, the risoles, rum raisin ice cream, strawberry cake and poffertjes is so good! The other flavor of ice cream is standard.

Gladys Santoso — Google review

Old restaurant and bakery since 1936. Most of the dishes are inspired by dutch culinary. Tried the Rhum Raisin Ice Cream and plain "Poffertjes" with icing sugar, both taste pretty good. These fluffy Poffertjes are baked delicious brown and crispy on the outside, but they still remain soft and airy. Service and cleanliness could have been better.

Vintage vibe will welcome you once you step in. They sell a lot of old school snacks and cake.. Please do try their rhum raisin ice cream! So nice, perfect for compensate Semarang hot weather!

I ordered 1 chocolate ice cream and 1 rum raisin ice cream, I waited 45 MINUTES JUST FOR ICE CREAM and it hasn't come out yet. Finally I asked the waiter, they simply answered "it'll come out later" WITHOUT checking the orders or asking other waiters OR DOING SOMETHING about it, then I asked another waiter, he gave me the wrong flavor (1 vanilla) i said i didn't order this, then he said “i don’t know, i am not the one who input your order”, WITHOUT (again) asking other waiter or checking my order, without any solutions🤦🏻‍♀️ Then I LITERALLY WENT to the KITCHEN and asked another waiter, then he checked and apologized because apparently he hadn't input my order yet 😭😂😅 what a shame to have such bad service at this legendary restaurant 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️Later, my order came out but they gave me 1 cup of rum raisin and chocolate combination ice cream, instead of 2 cups of ice cream 😭😭😭😭 My patience level 📉📉📉📉
