Mk8 air filter box
by Rabfinn » Tue Jul 11, 2023 6:04 pm
Hiya, has anyone else seen the two gaps at the rear of the air filter box on each corner? It's obviously letting water in (not wanted in there obviously) I felt it wasn't running as it should and you'll see why when you look at the paper filter!! I have put a KnN filter and not the usual paper one and it won't soak any water up like the paper one, anyway can anyone tell me if they know why these two perfectly symmetrical cuts out are there please. Pictures don't seem to be loading? I'll try on my laptop as soon as I get a minute

Hiya, thankfully thats the pictures to show now where the water is getting in the airbox can anyone please help to explain why this is designed like this, asi said before i have a KnN filter that has a black rubber seal as opposed to the orange paper one that's more dificult to mak out but you cant miss those two holes

That does seem an odd design. It's it a front wheel or rear wheel drive?

I have seen a design of a metal plate with edges that fits over the airbox to deflect water away and run it down to the floor avoiding the airbox and other things. Obviously an issue. I have a rwd and from what I can gather Ford made little extended gutters to take rain water from below the windscreen and direct it between the inner and outer wing so it didn't pour on the airbix and ecu.

I just covered with a thick PE sheet and clipped with wire near the firewall and radiator fan case. Working a treat in any heat. There is a puddle in the middle that is telling me it would have been in the air filter in not for the cover!

Great idea any help is appreciated as my solution is peeling off every few days! I tried adding tape right over the corners but because of they indents thats all the way round the top of the air box (they catch and fill with water) it always worked its way in. Does anyone know of an aftermarket box for it?
Thanks again

It's been running for a year now survived European heat and a climb over St Bernard's pass in 1st gear.
It does not melt to upset many evil tongues. However if it does and catches fire it will be my own fault and no insurance will pay out if they find out. So use at your own risk

Used to have to put a bag on top of my mk3 high top as one winter it filled the engine up with water was lucky I managed to turn the engine over by hand to get the water out of the cylinder when it did this it was only stud two wheels got a shock one morning when a cat that was sleeping on the n/s sound proofing jumped out when I opened the bonnet.
