Depending on your connection type, a good speed test result is if the speeds are at least 50 to 200 Mbps within range of the advertised speed. It's important to understand that the provider's advertised speed is based on a wired connection.

It could be an outdated router. Maybe you have a less-than-ideal router location. You could potentially solve slow speeds with an easy fix, like upgrading to a mesh network (which also has to be set up in the right spot) or simply restarting your modem and router.

Speed tests rely on different servers that could be placed anywhere in the world. The differences between the speed test server and your service provider could also produce different results.

When considering what internet speed you need for smooth online gaming, faster broadband speeds are better. For most gaming devices and multiplayer games, a fast internet speed for gaming of at least 25 Mbps is recommended. This provides lag-free play without disruption across multiple connected devices.

A good download speed is at least 100Mbps, and a good upload speed is at least 10 Mbps. With 100Mbps, you can stream movies, attend Zoom meetings, and play games online all on several devices at the same time.

Cisco - an industry leading manufacturer of networking and telecommunications hardware - says that for a good quality of service: Ping (or latency shouldn't go over 150 ms or 300 ms for a round trip) Jitter should remain below 30 ms. Packet loss should be less than 1%.

For one or two users who regularly stream high definition or 4K video, use video conferencing, participate in online gaming, or work from home, an internet speed of 12 Mbps up to 100 Mbps makes sense, but heavy internet use would need speeds on the higher end of that range.

In general, your internet speed test should be at least 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps within range of your top speeds. Now, if you're experiencing slow internet and your speed test confirms just as much, there are plenty of reasons why.

A good internet speed is anywhere between 50 and 100 Mbps which would allow a couple of people using a few devices to stream in HD or even 4K, stream music, game, and work from home. To make sure your connection is stable, check that the ping is below 50 ms and the jitter is under 10 ms.

Speed tests won't tell you your absolute internet speed, but they will give you a close approximation. It's a good practice to try multiple tests because the results can vary depending on your location and the time of day. Also, different tests highlight different aspects of your connection.

A good internet speed is at least 25Mbps download and 3Mbps upload. These internet speeds are the bare minimum for a broadband connection as defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). But you'll get better results with an internet plan that supports download speeds between 40–100Mbps.

A slow internet connection may be due to a variety of reasons. It could be your inefficient router, internet service provider (ISP) bandwidth throttling, outdated devices, or even malware.

A gig fiber connection will provide around 1,000 Mbps download and 1,000 Mbps upload—but you won't always see those numbers if you run a speed check on your computer. That bandwidth is shared between all your devices, and there are other factors that affect the speed of your connection.
